Awake but silent, they lay in bed, unwilling to face the prospect of another day of uncertainty and fear. The motel room, with its single queen-sized bed taking up two thirds of the room, was pleasant enough, but it was freezing in there, this the result of two tired travelers forgetting to adjust the thermostat before turning in. From what Clay could see of the light filtering through the sides of the gray, floor-to-ceiling drapes, it was a sunny day outside, but that helped very little. Inside, at least inside his mind, there was a storm.

By now the Inquirer would have acted on the anonymous tip--Clay wished he knew what that meant; was it all out in the open or not? For the hundredth time he questioned his actions, now two days in the past. Maybe it was overkill. Maybe he should have warned Canning first, given him a chance to pull back. Maybe. Too many “maybes.” “Maybe” he shouldn’t have gone to that goddamn Eagles game!

There was little possibility of getting a Philadelphia paper in Charleston, and calling the paper directly was out of the question. So far he had done nothing that would leave a trail; gas, food, motels, all had been paid for in cash. It was a policy that would ultimately fail since the cash hurriedly drawn from MAC machines before leaving Pennsylvania was rapidly disappearing.

“I sure wish I knew what the score was.”

Holding the covers tightly around her chin, Shelly turned her head in his direction and pretended to be confused. “Two to two; or did you fake an orgasm the second time?”

The smile her question forced upon him felt good. “Wise guy.”

“I’m not a ‘guy,’ I’m a gal. Have you forgotten that as well?” But then she relented. “Isn’t there some way we can find out what’s going on?”

Clay rolled over on his side to better take her in, then was immediately struck by how adorable she looked protected from a chilly room by covers that pushed upward even beyond her ears. “Who to call is one problem. Whether to call is another. Right now we could be the hottest item on the most-wanted list. One wrong move and we become a centerpiece in a world filled with cops.”

“Don’t you think that if the police were really after us, they would have found us by now. All they need do is put out an APB on a bright red Mustang.”

“Stop talking like a cop.”

She smiled. “You never used to mind.”

“I never was a fugitive before.” He knew it was a sick joke even as he voiced it. “Sorry.”

She sighed and lay there in silence, her eyes no longer on his but on the heavily textured ceiling. It looked like little puffs of painted cotton, and for a moment she wondered how they were able to do that.

“Maybe we should get up.” There was a notable lack of enthusiasm in Clay’s voice, as if what he really wanted to hear was a reason why they should not.
